ARE YOU HAPPY IN YOUR JOB?

I received an email a few days ago that contained one of the most common lines I hear from people who are in a career and life they feel stuck in.

It usually goes something like this:

“I’m not happy, Paul, but I need the money. I’ve got a mortgage to pay for, kids and all the usual bills. There’s no way out.”

I remember feeling the same way many years ago.

Sitting in the glass-walled office of the law firm I’d built, working seven days a week.

Putting on an act of being successful and happy to the outside world.

But secretly miserable and depressed.

I used to tell myself I was trapped in a prison I’d built. One that I’d constructed over decades with walls so thick I had no chance of escaping.

Then one sleepless night I had an epiphany.

You can’t build a prison around yourself. By definition a prison door has to be locked from the outside.

Which means I hadn’t built a prison, I’d built a fort.

A fort around myself that protected me from making the most difficult decisions.

The ones that would take me away from the comfortable choices I’d made over the years that had led me to a career and life that made me so unhappy.

I realised, though, that there was a silver lining to the dark cloud engulfing me.

If I’d built the fort I had its blueprints.

So I knew how to take it down and rebuild a new career and life that made me happy.

It would just take some difficult decisions and patience.

But I knew I could get there. One step at a time.

The most important thing was making that first choice to make changes and commit to doing whatever it took to create that new life.
