SURFACE-LEVEL SUCCESS
2/3/20262 min read
To the outside world I had it all.
I owned my own law firm, five rental properties in a growing portfolio, a slick city centre-apartment and a fancy car. I was married to a great girl, had a footballer style wedding and was running an online business that looked to be on the verge of becoming a multi-million pound monster.
But on the inside I was darkly depressed and miserable.
I often fantasised about how I would end it all without anyone knowing I’d taken my own life, because I didn’t want my family to be hurt by me making that choice.
The contrast between what I had and how I felt couldn’t have been more profound, and it angered me to my core because I’d done everything I’d always been told we need to do to have a great life.
I was in my mid-thirties and made a bold decision.
Before opting for the most dramatic solution, I would rip everything apart and figure out how everything had gone so badly wrong and what was behind my feelings despite the surface level success.
My obsessive nature led me down lots of rabbit holes, learning from experts all around the world in many different fields.
Working with therapists and coaches who all taught me something valuable.
What I learned would fill an encyclopaedia. My last book was 650 pages long and was written four years ago, so there’s been another raft of lessons since then.
But the fundamentals have stayed the same through all the years.
What we’re taught to do in our society isn’t about fulfilment or happiness.
It’s not about getting to our death bed and looking back at a great life in which we shone our unique light and fulfilled our purpose on this planet, living with love and abundance every day.
It’s about money and what our world looks like to everyone else, regardless of what’s going on behind the scenes.
Maybe it's time for a re-think.
