"THE WEEK RAN AWAY WITH ITSELF"

"I didn't have time, the week ran away with itself."

I said it then burst out laughing.

It was a few years ago and I was on a call with a health coach.

I'd been doing psychological and emotional work to fix problems in my life for a few years by this point, and had started to get pretty good at spotting the bullshit as it poured out of my mouth.

My coach had given me exercises to do between our sessions and I hadn't done them.

So I reverted to what I'd used as my excuse for decades.

It's probably the same excuse you make most days.

I was too busy.

I didn't have time.

But by the point I'd said this I'd already started implementing a new rule.

I'm not allowed to say "I didn't have time".

I have to say "I didn't make time".

The first is an excuse (and a bullshit one at that).

The second is taking radical responsibility for my choices.

The bit about what I said that made me laugh, though, was how ridiculous the things are we say as standard to justify not doing things that would be better for us.

"The week ran away with itself".

The "week" - which is an abstract concept that humans have created - had grown legs and, not only had it achieved that amazing feat, but it had run away WITH ITSELF.

I had this image of a cartoon week running away from me as I was desperately trying to do the thing I'd committed to do. It wasn't my fault. The pesky week had run away from me.

I was telling a client the story today and it still makes me laugh.

I'm not immune these days to bullshitting myself about the time I've had to do things, but I'm much better than I used to be.

Now when I haven't done something I said I'd do, I think of all the football or Netflix I've watched during the week, or how many times I've picked up my phone to look at social media, and it reminds me to take responsibility and say I didn't make time.

It was a choice, and by becoming more conscious of our choices we can take control of life instead of being a victim of units of time running away with themselves.

Where in your life are you bullshitting yourself and it's stopping you from doing something you know would improve things?
