WANT TO CHANGE YOUR FEELINGS?

The way we think and feel about anything is a memory of our past programming.

What the fuck does that mean?

Most of us have been raised to believe that the way we think and feel about anything is just the way we think and feel and, more problematically that:

- the way we think and feel is the right way and the only way; and

- there’s nothing we can do about it.

Both of which are wrong.

When we all bounced into this world, we were pretty much blank canvases.

Like a new computer you buy from a shop. There are a few basic programs installed, but everything else has to be programmed into it.

For decades we’ve been programmed by the people who raised us, by our family and friends and by the information we’ve consumed.

And that programming has created who we now see as us.

But who we are and the way we react to anything is just a memory of the programming we’ve had.

Dogs are my favourite example of this.

When I see a dog my whole system is filled with love, happiness and joy.

But someone else can see the same dog and be filled with fear and panic.

Which means the feelings can’t be coming from the dog.

The feelings each of us experience are caused by how we’ve been programmed to think and feel about dogs since we were little kids.

If you’ve always had positive experiences with them, you’ll feel like I do, but it might have only taken one negative experience for you to feel fear and panic instead.

We see this playing out negatively in the world by many people believing the way they think and feel is caused by the external stimulus (whether it’s politicians, sports, family members or anything else), and that their reaction is absolutely right and can’t be changed, so expect the world to change around them.

Which leads to a victim mentality and plenty of suffering.

The truth, though, is very different.

Because the way we think and feel has been programmed into us, it’s possible for us to change that programming.

Maybe you get angry regularly at your partner, your kids, your work colleagues or your favourite sports team.

Maybe you experience constant anxiety or worry as you move through the world.

Or maybe you just feel unfulfilled or like something is missing.

Whatever it is, the good news is that with some focus and effort, you can change how you react to anything and everything in life, and completely transform your experience of this mad existence.
